Indian American baby dies after family gets of Qatar Airways flight

REUTERS/Stringer An Indian American baby died on Wednesday after suffering breathing difficulties during a Qatar Airways flight from Qatar to India, according to a press release. When the three-and-a-half-hour flight from Doha, Qatar, landed in Hyderabad, India, family members of 11-month-old Arnav Varma of New Jersey had told airport staff that their baby had been ill. Varma was then brought to Apollo Medical Center in Hyderabad, about 50 minutes after the flight landed, he was already dead. It was noted in his death certificate that he had a red mark on his forehead when his body was brought to the hospital. The certificate confirmed that Varma’s father, Anil Varma Alluri, is from Hyderabad, according to multiple news reports. Indian American teen wins 2018 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes

Shreya Ramachandran (Courtesy: Gloria Barron Prize) Shreya Ramachandran, a 14-year-old Indian American form California, has won the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes for her nonprofit The Grey Water Project. Ramachandran founded The Grey Water Project, which promotes the safe reuse of grey water and water conservation by educating others how to gently reuse the unclean and unusable water from household sinks, showers, and laundry, according to Barron Prize’s website. Ramachandran has learned the California Plumbing Code and conducts seminars to show others how easy it is to build “laundry to lawn” grey water systems using organic detergents such as soap nuts, which are a natural berry shell that release soap when placed in water. It took her three years to conduct research on these soap nuts and finally conclude that it doesn’t harm soil, plants or aquatic life. She is now working with several California water agencies to promote…

The verdict is latest of a string of progressive judgments from India’s top court. Judges also decriminalized homosexuality and curbed the usage of a government biometric database by private companies in September, acknowledging arguments from privacy activists. “It’s time to say that husband is not the master of wife,” said Chief Justice Dipak Misra, delivering the verdict. “Legal sovereignty of one sex over the other sex is wrong.” Married women in India face huge pressure to limit contact with men other than their husbands. They are often restricted by family members to dress conservatively or remain inside the home in India’s deeply conservative society.
