Thousands in Midwest Celebrate India’s 73rd Independence Day

Organized by Indian Community Outreach (ICO) of Naperville, IL, the event was attended by more than 35,000 Indian-Americans from around the U.S., including several thousand local residents, according to a press release from organizers who said this year’s event was “very special” including a colorful parade with over 70 entries including 35 intricately crafted and decorated floats, and sponsored by various community organizations, businesses, armed forces, and restaurants. Indian-American actor Ansari in Forbes List of Highest-Earning Stand-Up Comedians Of 2019

Despite more than a year of troubled waters for famous Indian-American stand-up comedian, author and film-maker Aziz Ansari, the Hollywood actor has succeeded in keeping his finances in order, it appears. Upstate New York business owner sentenced for money laundering and other crimes

An Indian-American man from Liverpool, New York, was sentenced Aug. 21, to 60 months in prison and a 3-year term of supervised release for engaging in money laundering and maintaining a drug-involved premises. The sentence of Jayesh Patel, 49, who was caught as a result of a sting operation, was  announced Aug. 22, by the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York Grant C. Jaquith and other officials, in Syracuse, N.Y., according to a press release. As part of a related civil forfeiture case, Patel agreed to forfeit $931,588.06 in drug proceeds that were seized in cash during search warrants and from bank accounts. Additionally, Patel forfeited 5,150 shares of Solvay Bank stock worth over $200,000.00. In sentencing Patel, United States District Judge David N. Hurd said that the defendant “became wealthy by exploiting his customers’ addictions,” the press release noted. Patel, co-owner of Munchies convenience store…

Global watchdog to monitor Pakistan’s progress in tackling militant funding

Its Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) met in Canberra this week to discuss reports on countries including Pakistan, which was last year placed on a “grey list” of countries with inadequate controls over money laundering and terrorism financing. The reports “will now be subject to post-plenary quality and consistency review prior to publication,” it said in a statement on its website after the meeting ended. Indian government to rollback higher surcharge on foreign portfolio investors

REUTERS/Anushree Fadnavis NEW DELHI (Reuters) – The Indian government announced measures on Friday to revive economic growth and markets including the withdrawal of higher taxes for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and said it would release funds for bank recapitalisation upfront. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters the government had decided to withdraw the surcharge on FPIs which she had unveiled in her budget for the fiscal year ending March 2020. The higher tax applied to individuals and FPIs earning more than 20 million rupees annually which led to a sharp fall of Indian equity markets. FPIs have pulled out over $1 billion in August from the Indian markets. The government hopes the new measures will improve the sentiment leading to higher private investment and assuage…
